On the way to Mycenae, we visited Larrissa Castle. It is on top of a hill across the water from Nafplio and we'd seen it lit up at night.

Then, we visited Mycenae. There were some beehive-shaped tombs.

The Lions Gate entrance was cool.

We didn't have very much explanation of the site and, since it wasn't reconstructed, it was difficult to picture what Mycenae looked like. I had been really skeptical of Evans' rebuilding Knossos because it seemed like you could only get it wrong and that the reconstruction would be misleading and destructive. It sure was helpful, though! Now, I'm a big fan of good, step-by-step guidebooks with reconstructions in them. I'm also thinking that they should rebuild entire sites from scratch right next to the original so that you can wander around the reconstruction and then visit the ruins. I guess time, space, and money don't permit that!

When we returned to Nafplio, we climbed up to the Palamidi Fortress.

Built in the early 1700s, this fortress consists of 8 separate battlements, each designed to be held even if the others are taken by the enemy. It was really impressive. However, the Turks captured it within a year of its completion!
