October 27th, 2002 (Sunday)

On Sunday, we checked out of our pension and headed for Tiryns. The designers of this Mycenaean fortified city must have been very paranoid. The walls are 20 meters thick in some places and the biggest stones are estimated to weigh 14 tons.

The guidebook we bought at the entrance was great. It walked us through the site and showed sketches of what things used to look like.

Then, we drove to Sparta so we could see nearby Mystras the next day. We realized the guidebook didn't list a closing time for Ancient Sparta, so, even though the book said there's little left, we went to see Ancient Sparta. We followed the sign to the ancient theatre and found some small ruins. We climbed in them and were amazed that this was all that was left of the theatre.

We kept walking, exploring more of the site and it turned out that wasn't the ruins of the theatre -- this was:

I climbed an olive tree near the theatre and Steve made me pose for a picture.

We went to the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia an ancient site. They used to conduct human sacrafices there to honour the goddess. Later, the Spartans replaced it the sacrafices by flogging young boys. I guess that's slightly better. In any case, there wasn't much to see.
