October 25th, 2002 (Friday)

On Friday, we visited Epidaurus. Epidaurus is famous for its ancient theatre which was built in the 3rd century AD. The acoustics are incredible. You really can here a coin dropped on the center of the stage from any seat in the place. The best sound was in the middle section. The sound was softer the farther you got from center. In fact, when I was on the edge, I got a funny echo from a woman who was speaking at center stage.

There was also a sanctuary to Asclepius, the god of medicine. This was a large complex with lots of buildings, a gymnasium, etc. They were rebuilding and excavation large parts of it. There was a guy chiseling the top of a large block.

They were rebuilding another Tholos with a cool crane on a circular track.

That night, we wandered around the Akronafplio Fortress above our pension. The walls were partly lit in the dark, and the views of the Palamidi Fortress and the sky were great.
