October 24th, 2002 (Thursday)

I walked over to Monemvasia in the morning, entered the town and wandered through the streets.

I visited a museum too. The town used to be a major commercial center. Among other things, it used to export Malmsey wine. I met an English guy who used to run the Greek concrete company, Iraklis. Did you know that the US imports 25% of the concrete it uses? That's nuts. I enjoyed talking with him and his friend on the way to the top of hill.

Here's the view of the town from the top:

I visited the church, wandered around the ruins, and sat at the highest point on the island, reading my book.

After leaving Monemvasia, I took back roads to Nafplio where I was to meet Steve. In fact, I took a wrong turn and after following it a few kilometers ended up on a dirt road! It was gravel and made horrid noises when the big rocks banged on the bottom of the car. When the wind came up and it rained some, I got worried about getting stuck in the mud. Anyway, after 10+ miles of unpaved roads, I got back on pavement and resumed my journey to Nafplio.

I met Steve at our pension in Nafplio and we had dinner and gelato and wandered around town for a while.
