October 29th, 2002 (Tuesday)
Tuesday morning, we took the Diakofto-Kalavryta rack-and-pinion
railway up to Kalavryta. It went up a narrow gorge with a stream at
the bottom. We went through a bunch of tunnels and saw a few minor
rapids. The track was often steep. I think I must be spoiled with
the Rockies and the Sierras and even the other Greek mountains because
this ride did not impress me much. Perhaps in an open-air car it
might have?
We then drove down to Cape Sounion, south of Athens. We crossed the
Corinth canal, which was impressively deep, and then we had to drive
through Athens and Piraeus. It was a minor nightmare. We got to Cape
Sounion after dark.
