October 12th, 2002 (Saturday)

Saturday, we went to Kalafati Beach for a dive. Taking the bus, we didn't get there in time for the morning dive and we had some time to hang out on the beach near the dive shop for a while. The weather was a little dicey and it sprinkled on us a little.

After we had lunch, the dive shop people got back from the morning dive and we checked in and started getting our equipment. The first suit they gave me was a little too big, so I asked for a smaller one. The one they gave me eventually was smaller and much better, but the big pink patches on the side made me wonder if it was a woman's suit. Either way -- it worked!

Since the water was so choppy, they took us to a rocky part of the coast further north for a shore dive. We went to look where we'd go in and the guide gave the dive instructions -- in German! I got a pretty good laugh when, at the end, I asked if he could repeat it in English...please. The owner of the shop gave a quick summary to me and Machelle.

Then, we went to change to get in the water. It was all going well and I was almost ready when I was having trouble tightening/closing the zippers. I mentioned that I didn't remember it being so tight and Machelle said "Oh...we've got the wrong suits!" I'd put hers on and she'd put mine on. We swapped suits and were still ready before the Europeans finished their pre-dive cigarettes(!). Perhaps they had the cigarattes to wait for us, but I didn't get that impression.

The dive was cool. We saw sponges -- brown, grey, or black, with a hard shell and lots of holes. In fact, on this dive, they were all fuzzy; I thought my eyes were blurry at first. The guy I was basically diving with later told me that he thought it was because they were mating. We saw a few brightly-coloured fish. Lots of coral (and/or more sponges), purple, grey, black, and orange. At one point, there was a really cool indentation/cave in a rock with some cool fish, bright sponges, etc. It was sort of like a big fish tank. I also saw another tube-worm with the tassels and several fire worms. One fire worm puffed up when I disturbed the water around it. Its little white puffs got a lot bigger. I also saw a huge "clam". Its shell was as long as my arms, elbows to fingertips. I teased it with a piece of seaweed that was floating by and it closed. The animal inside the shell was pretty big.

After the dive, we had a great dinner of appetizers at "Aquarius", a taverna on the beach. There may have been some "everything tastes great after a dive" going on, but I recommend it anyway!
