October 11th, 2002 (Friday)

Friday, we visited Delos, a small island off the coast of the island of Mykonos. The whole island is a World Heritage site. It was once a busy trading center with 30,000 inhabitants. At one point, they were selling 10,000 slaves each day! We took a guided tour.

There were lots of houses. The big ones had central peristyle courtyards. These courtyards were open to the sky, and were surrounded by columns which held up the roof of the buildings around them. The courtyard usually had a big mosaic in the middle. The houses were named after the mosaics that were found in them or, when possible, after their owners. I think this is the House of Hermes:

This is the top of Mount Kynthos.

And this is the view back down to the main part of the site (if you're with Machelle).
